"Is one that brings life not death, one that is inclusive and not exclusive, humane and not dehumanizing, one that cares for the environment and does not despoil it" (Pope Francis Inventation
Letter 2019).
The Economy of Francesco (the economy of Francis) is a congress on sustainability to be held in Assisi (Italy)
from 19 to 21 November 2020. Participants will include prominent experts on various aspects of sustainability, 500 young entrepreneurs and economists, and Pope Francis. The organizer of the congress
is the Convent of Franciscan Minorites.
As things stand at present, the speakers and discussion partners include Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, promoter of the microfinance idea, Swiss
economist and happiness researcher Bruno S. Frey, Slow Food founder Carlo Petrini, sustainability researcher Kate Raworth and Tony Meloto, initiator of a Philippine poverty reduction
program.
The title of the Congress, The Economy of Francesco, refers to the founder of the Order, Francis of Assisi, whose radical commitment to poverty and his love for
creation are intended to symbolize the objectives of the Congress. At the same time, this motto also reflects the attitude and objectives of Pope Francis on economic issues, who sees in Francis of
Assisi "a prime example of concern for the weak and a holistic ecology" Francis has proclaimed on several occasions, for example in the encyclical letter Laudato si', that the fate of the planet
depends on a new form of economy. According to Pope Francis, the foundations for a new economic model should be solidarity and equality.
The aim of the congress is to bring together people who, in research and practice, are seeking alternative economic approaches and an economy "that lives and does
not kill, that includes and does not exclude". The three-day congress should also include reflection and silence, art and spirituality.
Well-known economists and social activists are expected as speakers at the congress, who have confirmed their participation as keynote speakers. The planned
presence of the Pope was also confirmed.
